Chapter Four: Henry

While Catherine slept, I went to call Mr. Thursday. I was expecting him not to pick up since it was 10:00 at night, but he did. Before I could speak, he said “Hello Lysander”
“Umm…how did you know it was me?”
“ I have caller ID” Caller ID my ss, I knew he was lying. When I began to speak he cut me off. “Lysander” he voice sounded hostile.  “We can’t talk over the phone. Something might be listening on”
“Like who?”
“I said, not now. I’ll meet you at Central Park a week from now and I’ll tell you more about my self and what I need you for” And before I could say anything, he hung up.

Whoever said you wake up with a clear head must have never had a care in the world. I woke up with a spitting headache and a rock in my stomach. I thought my first night sleeping on a real bed would be heaven, but I never slept so uncomfortable in my life. I was tossing and turning over whether I should actually talk to Mr. Thursday. I turned over in the bed and stared at Catherine, her red hair was sprawled over the pillow and I noticed there were tear stains on her face. The tears were very recent too, as if she’d woken up before me. I took my hand and caressed her cheek. Her eyes slowly opened and she gave me a sad look.
“Lysander?”
“Yes?”
“Henry is dead?” I sat straight up.
“How?”
“Gunshot” Those words echoed in my head. Henry is dead? Henry had been my best friend since the 3rd grade, he couldn’t be dead.
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner, Catherine?!” I could tell my voice sounded a lot more hostile than I wanted it to be.
“I…I…I’m sorry Lysander. I didn’t want to ruin your first day outta prison. I promised to tell you sometime and…” She started to cry. Now I really felt like crap. “Shh” was all I could offer to her

I had to go for a walk; maybe the sound of birds singing might lighten my mood. Well, it didn’t. Henry and I became friends over a quiz. In Mrs. Grazes’ 3rd grade class we were taking a spelling quiz and Henry caught me cheating and immediately turned me in. After my lecture with the teacher, she gave me a slip for my parents to sign and sent me off to lunch. While I was eating my sandwich and trying to find a way to hide the slip from my parents, Henry sat next to me. He asked what the slip was for; I told him I’d get my hide tanned because he squealed on me. So he took the slip and signed my mother’s name. I told him it wasn’t going to work, but he just replied with, “I’ve got good hand writing. So you’re cool” Well, I tried it and it didn’t work. Mrs. Grazes sent me to the principal’s office. When the principal asked me if I signed it, I lied and said I did. But as soon as I said it, Henry walked in and confessed. Both of us got slips that day, but we didn’t care. That day we became best friends ever since, until today. The thought of Henry’s death still hadn’t really sunk in; it felt like a bad dream. Henry was even there when I shot…
The person who said “ignorance is bliss” mostly likely had a life like mine.
